This.
The reasons pirates may scramble at the sight of real opposition is simple:
1) We may want to switch ships and/or force you fight on our terms. 2) We may recognize your group as one who hot drops cap ships like they're Velators 3) We may recognize your group as one who uses log on traps (scouts don't help here) 4) We may have been dumb and realized we didn't have enough scouts to know you don't have 30 ships two jumps out
Quoting again because it can't be quoted enough. Me and a few of my alliance mates were getting flamed in our own alliance chat a few weeks ago for shooting neutrals in low sec. I myself constantly tease our members for blobbing. But at the end of the day, the blob usually wins. And while we all play the game to have fun, winning is generally more fun than losing.
That having been said, I have had some very fun losses, wins or some combination thereof in small gang PvP and I like it best. But blobs are a reality. As an FC, you can't say "4 BS on the ___ gate, x up" and then only take 4 out of the 15 who reply. And, really, why would you? Maybe this group is planning on hotdropping you? Maybe they have 5 more ships up the pipe or on the other side of the gate. Sure, you can wait andscout the area 4 jumps in all directions, but by then you target usually has moved on or you've missed your chance.
And now I want to share my blob story. Last Saturday, my alliance reinforced a Shinra POS in low sec with a couple dreads and a decent sized BS fleet. 13 hours later, we come back to finish the job with a smaller BS fleet and the caps waiting to be cyno'd in. We'd been dropped by 2 carriers the last time it had been tried, so we were laying a tarp of sorts for them. Tower ges to 40% armour, 3 hostiles in local and only a Basilisk inside the shields. Probe warps to the middle of the blob and despite my shouting "kill it, kill it, ******* kill it now!" into my mic at 6AM, to my roommates dismay, a cyno appeared. I, of course, remained calm and killed the Probe, but not before 13 carriers and 4 moms jumped into us. We lost like 4 or 5 BS' and then our scout reported Chowdown's Avatar in local.

Just thought I'd share that as my personal favorite blob/hotdrop that I've ever been a part of.
p.s. we finished the POS a few hours later
